Dear Corinna, please introduce yourself briefly in two sentences.
My name is Corinna Heitmann. I have been residing in Switzerland, in Lucerne, for four years. I was born in Diez an der Lahn, Germany, studied in Marburg, got married, had two children and also worked for an extended period in my own practice.
What do you currently enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time, I really enjoy hiking. That was, among other things, also a reason why I came to Switzerland. I really like the mountains and wanted to be closer to them and I often go to the mountains on weekends on foot or by mountain bike, and I also really enjoy meeting up with friends
Do you have a family?
Yes, indeed, I have two children: a 23-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son.
What is your favourite book or movie?
My favourite writer is John Irving and my favourite book by him is 'The Cider House Rules'. My favourite movie is 'Out of Africa', starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, both of whom I highly regard.
Is there a piece of wisdom that has guided you in your career?
The piece of wisdom that accompanies me in my career is "Every journey begins with a single step." I would say that this has been with me since my memorable time as an au pair in London, where I also stumbled upon this insightful saying on a postcard. I believe it’s important to embark on a journey with determination. When the mountains seemed very high and I was unsure of my ability to handle certain things, it always helped me to say "Okay, I’ll start slowly and the rest will come."
Why are the topics of gynaecology, fertility, and the desire to have children important to you?
Women, indeed, are close to our hearts —from puberty into the mature years of older age. As gynaecologists, we are fundamentally the family doctors for women, and that journey starts in adolescence with critical topics such as contraception, then progresses to pregnancy and later, perhaps, other significant illnesses, in which we can offer support and care for women, and also have a very intense relationship or connection. And specifically on the topic of fertility, which consistently accompanies women throughout their lives and life planning is oriented around it. Young girls are already quite interested in understanding how things might unfold later in life, should they face any issue with their menstrual cycle. In this respect, I find it a very central issue in gyneacology.
What have been the most beautiful moments in your life?
In my private life, definitely the birth of my two children. These are without a doubt incredibly emotional moments and I wouldn’t want to miss them for the world.
Is there a patient story that you particulary remember?
There are certainly many stories I could write down, but at the beginning of my career at my private practice, I had a young woman who was very desperate because she had been told she couldn’t have children due to PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Half a year later, she was pregnant. We examined everything as thoroughly as possible. She received a medication and then became pregnant relatively quickly. Shortly thereafter, a second time. She was so incredibly happy. It was very intense and a great experience also for me as a young doctor. She continued to visit for check-ups for many years until I left Marburg. And so I was able to see the two little girls grow up which made me very happy.
What is your vision at Cada Fertility?
My vision is to accompany women and their partners in this often difficult journey to parenthood - together with our very motivated and empathetic team to support them and provide them with the necessary expertise and advice so that they feel comfortable.
