Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here you will find the most important questions and answers about the fertility analysis at Cada. If your question is not answered here, please feel free to contact us directly.

Can couples attend the consultation together?

Yes, attending consultations together as a couple is encouraged and highly beneficial. Collaborative participation enables both partners to assess the information together, ask questions and jointly navigate decisions regarding fertility and family planning goals.

Why should couples have their fertility tested?

In reality, many couples face challenges in conceiving. These obstacles can stem from various factors. Consequently, it's prudent for both partners to undergo fertility testing. This proactive step enables the identification of potential causes of infertility, laying the groundwork for devising effective treatment strategies that align with your family planning goals.

Which fertility tests are available?

There are both fertility tests for women and fertility tests for men to assess fertility:

Blood analysis: Blood analyses can provide information about hormonal imbalances, infections, immune status, clotting disorders and general health conditions.

Semen analysis: For men, semen analysis evaluates sperm quality through spermiograms, including sperm count, motility and shape.

Ultrasound: Women undergo an ultrasound examination to check the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Swab test: Swab tests in women can indicate infections or irregularities in the cervix.

How reliable are fertility tests?

Tests to assess fertility, in particular semen analysis and hormone analysis, are extremely reliable. However, they require interpretation by specialists to allow an accurate diagnosis and individually tailored treatment plans.

At what age are you at your most fertile?

The most fertile phase in life is usually in the early to mid-20s. That's when women have the best chance of a healthy pregnancy as egg quality declines from the age of 30. Men retain good sperm quality for longer, although this also declines slightly with age.

When should you test fertility?

It is generally recommended to test fertility if pregnancy does not occur despite regular unprotected sexual intercourse over a year. For 35-year-old women who are trying to conceive, fertility tests can be considered after just six months.

How does age affect fertility in both partners?

Age can affect fertility in both partners. In women, egg quality and quantity decreases, while men may experience a decrease in sperm quality as they age. This can reduce the chances of a successful pregnancy and increase the risk of complications.

What are the signs of infertility?

The following factors may indicate infertility in women and men, but are not necessarily definitive reasons for infertility. An exact diagnosis can only ever be made through a medical examination.

Possible signs of infertility in women:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Painful menstruation
  • Recurrent miscarriages
  • Endometriosis
  • Ovulatory disorders

Possible signs of infertility in men:

  • Abnormal sperm analysis
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Varicoceles (varicose veins in the scrotum)
  • Ejaculation problems

How does smoking and/or excessive alcohol consumption affect fertility?

Both smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can affect fertility in men and women. It can lead to hormonal imbalances, reduced sperm counts and impaired egg quality. Quitting smoking and moderate alcohol consumption can improve fertility.

Can fertility problems be caused by being overweight or underweight?

Yes, both being underweight and overweight can affect fertility. In women, this can lead to menstrual irregularities and an imbalance in hormone levels, while obesity in men can affect sperm quality. A healthy weight often promotes optimal fertility.

Does taking medication affect fertility?

Yes, certain medications have the potential to impact fertility. Antibiotics, chemotherapy, hormonal medications and various other drugs might adversely affect family planning. If there's a desire to conceive and the use of specific medications is necessary, seeking medical advice is highly recommended.

Can same-sex couples also have their fertility tested?

Yes, same-sex couples can also have their fertility tested. Although the biological factors are different, tests such as spermiograms, hormone analysis and, if applicable, reproductive technologies can be used to assess the fertility of both partners.

What are the next steps after both partners have tested their fertility?

Following the fertility tests, conducted at Cada, all assessments are meticulously processed in our laboratory, typically within 7 days. Once completed, the comprehensive results are promptly accessible through the Cada app to the individual undergoing treatment. Subsequently, these findings form the basis for a detailed diagnosis, which is thoroughly reviewed and discussed with the attending physician.

In a personalized consultation with the couple, our specialists utilize these test outcomes to craft a bespoke treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. This collaborative session allows for an in-depth exploration of the diagnosis and ensures that the proposed treatment aligns seamlessly with the couple's objectives and preferences.
