Egg freezing in Zurich
From the early 30s onwards, the quality and number of a woman's eggs steadily declines. The earlier the eggs are frozen and preserved, the better the conditions for possible IVF treatment at a later date. Our doctors will advise you individually on your options.

In social freezing, unfertilised eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using a minimally invasive procedure under short anaesthesia. They are then frozen by cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen at -197°C. This ensures that the eggs retain the quality they had at the time of retrieval.
Good to know: The younger you are when you freeze your eggs, the higher the quality of the eggs and the fewer cycles are needed to achieve a reasonable number of eggs. If you decide to undergo IVF treatment later on, eggs frozen at an early age offer the best possible conditions for a successful pregnancy.
There are various reasons why women decide to undergo social freezing.
Whether it's a lack of a partner, career or other priorities. Anyone who knows that children could be on the cards at some point can create the best possible starting point for this by freezing their eggs.
If there are cases of premature menopause or reduced fertility in your family, social freezing may be a sensible option for preserving your eggs at an early stage.
Chemotherapy, radiation or certain medications can permanently affect fertility. By freezing your eggs before starting treatment, you can still realise your dream of having children.

Why is timing crucial in social freezing?
From the early 30s onwards, egg quality steadily declines. For example, at the age of 30, the chance of becoming pregnant naturally per cycle is around 20%, whereas at the age of 40 it is only around 5%. In addition, the risk of miscarriage increases during pregnancy. Social freezing allows you to preserve your eggs in their current quality. The earlier you take this step, the higher your chances of a successful pregnancy in future IVF fertility treatment.
Knowing that your desire to have children can still be realised later on gives you a new sense of security. Fears about the future surrounding family planning fade into the background.
Social freezing can take the pressure off relationships and everyday life. The decision to have a child can be made in a more conscious and relaxed manner, without the feeling of racing against time.
IVF fertility treatment is not a must after social freezing, but an option. Your frozen eggs are a safeguard in case you need them.

A social freezing cycle usually involves three appointments at our clinic. Before treatment begins, you will also have an initial consultation with one of our doctors, during which your individual treatment plan will be drawn up based on a fertility analysis.

Follicle maturation is monitored through ultrasound and blood hormone levels. Once the follicles and uterine lining have developed well, the final egg maturation is triggered, and the date for the follicle retrieval is scheduled.

Shortly before the expected ovulation, egg retrieval (follicular puncture) is performed as an outpatient procedure under brief anesthesia. The retrieved eggs are then analysed in the laboratory. Afterwards, all healthy eggs are cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen.
After treatment, you will receive an AI-supported report that analyses the quality of your eggs and outlines your individual chances of success.

As a general rule, the younger you are when you freeze your eggs, the higher the quality of the eggs and the fewer cycles are needed. The conditions are therefore best before the age of 35.
From the age of 35 onwards, fertility declines significantly with each passing year. The number of eggs decreases, egg quality declines and the risk of miscarriage increases. If you want children but are currently unable to have them, for example due to a lack of a partner or career reasons, social freezing is strongly recommended from this age onwards. Our doctors will advise you individually on your personal situation.
That depends mainly on your age and your egg reserve. Under the age of 35, 1 to 2 cycles are usually sufficient, while 3 to 4 cycles may be necessary for women over 35. The aim is to freeze at least 15 to 20 eggs in order to have a good chance of pregnancy later on.
The eggs are thawed and fertilised using IVF/ICSI with sperm from the partner or a donor. After a cultivation phase in the laboratory, the best-developed embryo is transferred to the uterus.
In Switzerland, eggs can currently be frozen and stored for a maximum of 10 years (5 years plus an extension of a further 5 years). Swiss politicians are currently discussing an extension of this period. We expect the regulations to be brought into line with those of many other European countries in the coming years.
A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and no nicotine or alcohol can have a positive effect on egg quality. Before treatment, we carry out a fertility analysis and check vitamin D, ferritin and TSH levels, among other things. Based on this, supplements may be recommended.
No, on the contrary. Since social freezing uses younger, higher-quality eggs, the age-related risk of miscarriage can actually be reduced.
Not directly during freezing, but during subsequent use. When your eggs are thawed and fertilised via IVF or ICSI, the resulting embryos can be genetically tested before transfer. This increases the chances of pregnancy and reduces the risk of miscarriage.
You can have the eggs destroyed at any time or donate them for research. The decision is yours. There is no obligation to use the eggs.
