Understanding in vitro fertilisation (IVF)

IVF involves extracting multiple eggs from the ovaries and fertilising them with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment. The embryos are incubated for up to six days, allowing them to develop.

This period enables the identification of the most viable embryos, which are then selected for transfer into the uterus. Remaining healthy embryos may be cryopreserved for future use.

Why should you choose IVF?

There are many reasons why couples opt for IVF treatment. The experts at Cada can help you understand the underlying causes and choose the right treatment plan for you.

icon

Female fertility issues

Endometriosis, menstrual irregularities, and uterine conditions such as fibroids or malformations can affect fertility.

icon

Male fertility issues

A low sperm count or reduced sperm quality can impair fertility and may necessitate ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

icon

Exhaustion of other treatments

If hormone therapies or inseminations have been unsuccessful, IVF may offer a higher chance of success.

icon

Advanced age

Female fertility undergoes a sharp decline after age 35. IVF can be an effective tool for increasing the likelihood of pregnancy.

icon

Genetic disorders

Chromosomal abnormalities, Cystic Fibrosis, Huntington's Disease or Fragile X Syndrome can lead to fertility problems.

icon

Idiopathic infertility

If no underlying cause for infertility is found despite thorough examinations, IVF can be a viable option.

Step-by-Step IVF Treatment Guide

An IVF cycle at Cada typically includes 5 appointments, lasting between 30 minutes and 3 hours (for the follicle puncture). During these appointments, our experts take the time to support you and guide you step by step through your treatment.

Visit 1

Kick-Off & Start of Stimulation

The Kick-Off marks the start of IVF treatment with the female's stimulation therapy. During this stage, each step is thoroughly explained and the necessary medications are provided.

Visit 2

Check-In

Follicle maturation is monitored through ultrasound and blood hormone levels. Once the follicles and uterine lining have developed well, the final egg maturation is triggered, and the date for the follicle retrieval is scheduled.

Visit 3

Follicle Puncture

Shortly before the expected ovulation, egg retrieval (follicular puncture) is performed as an outpatient procedure under brief anesthesia. The retrieved eggs are then analyzed in the laboratory. On the same day, the male partner provides a sperm sample. In the IVF laboratory, the eggs and sperm are combined and carefully observed under optimal conditions (IVF). If sperm quality is compromised, fertilization is achieved through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Visit 4

Embryo Transfer

Five days after fertilisation, the embryo is transferred to the woman's uterus under ultrasound guidance. This procedure does not require anesthesia. Additionally, all necessary medications leading up to the pregnancy test are thoroughly discussed.

Visit 5

Pregnancy Test

Cada's medical experts utilise a highly accurate, blood-based pregnancy test to confirm pregnancy

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Discover answers to the most common queries about IVF here. Should your question remain unresolved, please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly.

What does the abbreviation IVF stand for?

Icon

The abbreviation IVF stands for "in vitro fertilisation". This is an assisted reproductive technique in which the egg and sperm are combined outside the body in the laboratory to achieve pregnancy.

When is IVF advisable?

Icon

IVF is recommended for couples dealing with severe fertility issues, recurrent miscarriages, or when other fertility treatments have not succeeded. This advanced approach provides hope for achieving pregnancy when other methods have not been effective.

What are the success rates for IVF?

Icon

Success rates for IVF vary based on factors such as age, the underlying cause of infertility, and the health of the eggs and sperm involved. Generally, success rates per cycle range from 20% to 40%, with individual variations. Our specialists can offer a realistic assessment based on your specific circumstances.

What are the prerequisites for undergoing IVF?

Icon

The requirements for IVF treatment can vary, but typically the following criteria must be met:

  1. Diagnosis of infertility: An accurate diagnosis of infertility is necessary to understand the causes.

  2. Ovarian reserve: The woman should have a sufficient ovarian reserve.

  3. Uterine health: The uterus should be healthy and receptive to pregnancy.

  4. Sperm quality: High-quality sperm from the partner or a donor is critical.

  5. Overall health: The general health of both partners influences the outcome.

What is the cost of IVF?

Icon

The cost for a fresh IVF cycle typically ranges from CHF 5,000 to 8,000.

Is medication required before IVF?

Icon

In most cases, preparation with medication is required for IVF treatment. This includes the administration of hormones to promote egg maturation, GnRH analogs to regulate the cycle and an hCG injection to trigger ovulation. The exact drug preparation varies depending on the individual treatment plan. There is also the option of IVF naturelle, which involves minimal or no medication, relying on the body's natural cycle.

Is there an age limit for IVF treatment?

Icon

In Switzerland, there is no uniform legal age limit for IVF treatments. The decision is therefore usually at the discretion of the specialist treating the patient at the respective fertility clinic.

How many IVF attempts are typically needed to achieve pregnancy?

Icon

The number of IVF attempts required to achieve a pregnancy varies from person to person. Factors such as the woman's age, the cause of infertility and the response to treatment all play a role. While some may achieve pregnancy on the first attempt, others might require multiple cycles.

What is the duration of the IVF process?

Icon

The entire IVF process spans several weeks. Following 2-3 weeks of medication and hormonal stimulation, egg retrieval is conducted, which lasts about 20-30 minutes. Post-fertilisation, embryos develop for 3-5 days before being transferred. A pregnancy test is then performed 14 days after the embryo transfer. The total duration can vary depending on individual responses to treatment.

How does IVF differ from IUI?

Icon

While both IVF and IUI are forms of assisted reproduction, IVF involves fertilising eggs outside the body, and IUI entails placing sperm directly into the uterus to foster natural fertilisation. IVF is more complex and typically used when other methods, including IUI, have not been successful.
